Everyone is asking....

What did I do in Ethiopia? Here is the background:

In the late 50's a small group of European missionaries and medical workers purchased a small plot of land by the Ethiopian government in order to start a farm and rehabilitation center for leprosy victims. The community started with just a few families but quickly grew to several thousand individuals that traveled from all over the country. The villagers named the community Addis Hiwot "New Life". There was tef, corn, wheat and beans grown on 300 hectares and employment opportunities offered to the villagers despite their handicaps caused by the leprosy.
In 1974 a Marxist regime forcefully seized power and the foreign workers were expelled, the water, electricity and any funding was cut off. The villagers were left with arid land and very little means of survival.
The story is pretty bleak but there is some hope. With the introduction of Multi Drug Treatment, leprosy is a curable disease and there are organizations and individuals (American Leprosy Mission, Compassion, etc.) supporting the community. Even with this support many people live in dire poverty and can often not afford even the simplest treatment.
I traveled to Addis Hiwot with Aboye Wanore who himself was inflicted with leprosy at an early age. He told me the story how as a small child, he was carried for a long distance until they reached a road leding to Addis Ababa where here received treatment at ALERT leprosy hospital. After treatment he was moved to Addis Hiwot where he lived for over twenty years.

Either I have got a hole in my head today or I missed something because I would still like to ask the question what you were doing there? That you have used your camera and talent to share Addis Hiwot with us, that I can see of course. Did you go out there assigned by any organizaiton, web site or magazine? Will the pictures be published somewhere else?

Well, you don't have a whole in your head. I never didn't answer WHY I was here.
It's a combination of a few things. First off I was just incurably curious and had to go and have a look. The initial reason was to satisfy my curiosity. However, I did not expect to find such level of deprivation and after coming home and giving it some thought I realized that I could actually help.
Here is my plan:
I am selling the images through a few stock agencies as well as granting free usage to a few organizations (American Leprosy Mission, Save The Children, Compassion, etc.). The profit from the stock sales will go to improve the housing in Addis Hiwot. Adequate housing is one of the most pressing needs and will vastly improve the quality of life. Some existing houses need new roof tiles. The corrugated sheets of metal cost about 14 bucks each and there are roughly 6 sheets on an average house. Some houses are in pretty bad shape and will most likely not make it through the next rainy season so there also needs to be some new houses built.
Habitat for Humanity, Compassion and Save the Children all support this type of work and can provide avenues and oversight.
There is the long answer. I will post updates later in the year.
